Pompeii's Location in Italy

Pompeii is situated in the Campania region of southern Italy, one of the country's most historically and culturally rich areas. The ancient city lies approximately 23 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of Naples, Italy's third-largest city, at the foot of the infamous Mount Vesuvius. The modern Italian town of Pompei (spelled with a single "i" in Italian) sits directly adjacent to the archaeological site.

Geographic Coordinates

The archaeological site of Pompeii is located at approximately 40.7508°N latitude, 14.4869°E longitude. It sits at an elevation of roughly 30 meters (98 feet) above sea level on a natural plateau formed by an ancient lava flow from Vesuvius, which gave the city a naturally elevated and defensible position.

Relationship to Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius rises dramatically to the north-northwest of Pompeii, its summit standing 1,281 meters (4,203 feet) above sea level. The distance from the center of Pompeii to the crater of Vesuvius is approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) in a straight line. This proximity was both a blessing and a curse for the ancient city — the volcanic soil surrounding Vesuvius was extraordinarily fertile, supporting the agriculture that made Pompeii prosperous, but it also placed the city squarely within the volcano's destructive reach.

The Bay of Naples

In ancient times, Pompeii was closer to the sea than it is today. The city's western walls were within approximately 1 kilometer of the coastline, and the city served as a port on the Sarno River, which connected it to the Bay of Naples. Over the centuries, volcanic activity, sediment deposition, and geological changes have pushed the coastline further west, and the modern shoreline is now about 2 kilometers from the archaeological site.

The Bay of Naples, one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the Mediterranean, was a center of trade and culture in the ancient world. Pompeii's position on this bay, combined with its access to the Sarno River, made it a natural hub for maritime commerce.

Regional Context

Pompeii is part of the broader Vesuvian area, which includes several other important archaeological sites destroyed or damaged by the same eruption of 79 AD:

• Herculaneum — Located approximately 20 km northwest of Pompeii, closer to the base of Vesuvius. This wealthy seaside town was buried under up to 20 meters of volcanic material.
• Stabiae (modern Castellammare di Stabia) — About 4.5 km south of Pompeii.
• Oplontis (modern Torre Annunziata) — Approximately 6 km west of Pompeii, known for the spectacular Villa Poppaea.
• Boscoreale — Just north of Pompeii, where several Roman villas have been excavated.

How to Find Pompeii

From Naples

The most common approach is from Naples, which is well-connected by air, rail, and road. The Circumvesuviana commuter train runs from Naples (Garibaldi station) directly to Pompei Scavi station in about 35 minutes.

From Rome

Rome is approximately 240 km (150 miles) to the north. High-speed Frecciarossa trains cover the Rome-Naples journey in about 70 minutes, after which you transfer to the Circumvesuviana for the final leg.

From the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast lies south of Pompeii, across the Lattari Mountains. Sorrento, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, is connected to Pompeii by the same Circumvesuviana train line (about 30 minutes).

By Car

Pompeii is accessible via the A3 motorway (Autostrada del Sole), which connects Naples to Salerno. Take the Pompei Ovest exit. Parking is available near the entrances to the archaeological site, though it can be difficult to find during peak season.

The Modern Town

The modern town of Pompei (population approximately 25,000) should not be confused with the ancient archaeological site. The modern town grew up around the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary (Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario), a major Catholic pilgrimage site built in the late 19th century. The town provides hotels, restaurants, and services for the millions of tourists who visit the archaeological site each year.
